Can having sex make my vagina looser?

Lots of people worry about whether or not sex will affect their vagina or front hole. There’s a myth that having too much sex or lots of partners can make the front hole or vagina looser, but this really isn’t true! This myth is based on some common ideas about how vaginas work that aren’t accurate. If you’re worried about penetrative sex affecting your front hole, learning more about your body and sexual health may help!

A note about language: We’ll use the word “vagina” a lot in this FAQ. But it’s important to know that not everyone is comfortable calling their genitals a vagina, and that’s okay! That’s why we also sometimes use words like “front hole” when talking about this body part. At SextEd, we respect peoples’ right to use words they’re comfortable with when talking about their own bodies.

Will having a lot of sex affect my vagina?

Having a lot of sex won’t make someone’s vagina looser, or change the shape or size of the vagina in any other ways. This is true whether or not someone was born with their vagina!

It’s important to know that a non-surgically created vagina or front hole is a muscular tube. This means that it will stretch and open when something is inside of it and will close back up when that thing is taken out. Because of this, frequent sex won’t make someone’s vagina looser! When a person is turned on, the vagina loosens and expands. Once sex or arousal is over, the vagina goes back to its original size and elasticity. Sometimes, this is called vaginal “tenting”.

While vaginas that are created through vaginoplasty don’t experience this, they’re also not affected by having or not having a lot of sex. We’ll talk more about vaginoplasty later on in this article!

It doesn’t matter how someone got their vagina, how often or how hard it’s penetrated, or how big the penis or sex toy someone may be using is. The front hole doesn’t change shape in any sort of permanent way because of sexual activity.

Is there anything that can make a vagina looser?

For people born with a vagina or front hole, age and childbirth are two common things that can change the elasticity or tightness.

After someone gives birth, the muscles of their vagina can take up to six months post-delivery to get back to the shape and size they were before. But the muscles are not changed permanently! This temporary change in tightness is because giving birth affects the pelvic floor muscles.

If someone wants to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles after childbirth — or just in general! — they can do kegel exercises. Kegel exercises can help with pelvic floor and urinary problems, and can make orgasms feel stronger. But, they don’t permanently tighten the vagina!

Change can also come with age. As people with vaginas reach menopause, their hormone levels drop, which means the vaginal walls can thin out and become less elastic, so the muscles may feel looser. They might also produce less natural lubrication when they’re turned on. Using lube can help with this!

What if I’ve had a vaginoplasty?

People with surgically created vaginas can experience change in the girth and depth of their vagina over time. This is because after a vaginoplasty, people have to dilate, or stretch, their vaginas with dilators up to 4 times a day (though after the first year, they won’t need to dilate as much). A doctor will let them know how much they should dilate after the surgery.

With dilation, the size of the vaginal canal can change over time. That’s because the skin that lines the vagina has elasticity to it. This is common, healthy, and won’t damage the vaginal canal. Only dilation over time will have this effect. Sex will not permanently alter the tightness of your vagina, even if you’ve had a vaginoplasty!

If you’re concerned about losing depth or tightness in your vagina after a vaginoplasty, you can talk to your doctor about scheduling yearly pelvic exams!

Can HRT affect front hole tightness?

Transmasculine people on testosterone and/or estrogen blockers may experience changes in their front holes. On HRT, the tissue that lines the front hole can become thinner and less stretchy. The front hole canal can also narrow and shorten. This means the front hole can become tighter on HRT.

Having sex on HRT won’t affect the front hole’s tightness. Because HRT can cause dryness, many people recommend using lube when having sex on HRT!

Why does my vagina feel tighter or looser sometimes?

One condition that can make the vagina feel tighter is vaginismus. Vaginismus causes the muscles of the vaginal canal to contract, which can make penetration (even with small objects like tampons) painful. There’s no one way to treat vaginismus, but for those who may have it, a doctor can tell them more about their options!

A more common reason why someone might feel like their vagina is tight during sex is not being physically aroused enough. Like other muscles, the vagina can tense up or relax depending on how someone is feeling! Taking it slow, checking in with your partner about how you’re both feeling, and using lube can help. And if penetration just isn’t working, there are lots of other ways to have sex! Oral sex, mutual masturbation, and using sex toys with a partner are just a few.

It’s common for peoples’ bodies to change from day to day, or over longer periods of time. For example, someone’s mood, health, or sexual needs can change from one sexual experience to the next. Age, certain medications, and pregnancy can also have an effect. But all of these are very common! There’s nothing wrong with feeling like your vagina or front hole is tighter at some times than others. It doesn’t mean you’re having “too much” or “not enough” sex.

It’s possible for a vagina to give and get pleasure no matter how loose or tight it is! As long as you and your partner(s) are having a good time, there’s usually nothing to worry about. And if you are worried, you can talk to a doctor or nurse about your concerns!
